While it is frustrating to be ready to use your PC and find it isn’t working, you may be able to fix it quickly and easily by troubleshooting the problem. Some of the most commonly reported problems are the PC not booting, it has only a blank or blue screen, or your PC is functioning slowly.
Here’s how to troubleshoot in all three scenarios:
PC Not Booting
Although it may sound basic, first make sure that all of your PC’s cables are properly connected to the power source and that the power source is receiving electricity properly. If you are using power strips, remove the cable plugs from them and then plug the cables into the wall to make certain that you don’t just have a power strip failure. To continue troubleshooting, detach any external devices that are connected to your PC, such as speakers, scanners, and printers, and try to boot the PC. If the PC still doesn’t boot, you may have a faulty motherboard, case switch, or central processing unit. Try to boot the PC without using the case switch. If that doesn’t work, it is possible that the PC has some internal damage.
PC Has a Blank or Blue Screen
If all you see is a blank or blue screen when you start your PC, check that your monitor is properly connected and functional. Next, tap the F8 key, which may take you to a boot screen with a Safe Mode option. If your home screen returns in this mode, you may have a faulty video driver.
If you are unable to access Safe Mode, try downloading and burning a Linux Live CD. If this works, you probably have a hard drive or Windows installation issue. Next, try re-installing Windows, which may help your PC boot properly. If you do need to re-install Windows, make sure to save your important files first.
Slow PC
Most of us experience this with our PCs at some time. First, reboot your PC to see if that solves the problem. If that doesn’t work, try removing all of the files you no longer need from your hard drive and put some others on an external hard drive. Make certain that your anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware applications are operational, as they all work to help your computer run at optimum speed.
As an alternative, you may consider upgrading your hard drive to a solid-state drive (SSD) which can significantly improve the speed of your PC.
